ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the disparate forms of healing, the same placebo factors as in pharmacotherapy were active, both with the therapist and with the clients: hope that this treatment will work for this client; confidence that the diagnosis and the treatment method are right; and allegiance to the school of therapy the therapist belongs to. The English word hope has the same etymology as the verb to hop: The image that springs to mind is that of children hopping in the expectation of a treat. Hope makes us confident that change is possible, that good things can happen, that we can attain our goals that we will be able to live as we wish to live. Hope is always hope for something: "Faith is not a preoccupation with the object of the faith. Fear, nostalgia and hope, to the contrary, are always turned toward their object".
