ABSTRACT

In 1970 and 1971 I wrote the first separately printed studies emphasizing the literary importance of Edith Wharton’s stories of terror and the supernatural. 1 Since that time her selected ghost stories have been reprinted, 2 and there are signs they are gaining new attention. Most of Wharton’s critics now emphasize the cardinal truth about her work in this genre, its psychological richness and its subtle moral discriminations. 3
