ABSTRACT
This chapter is organized into two sections. The first presents an analysis of the growth of small manufacturing firms in Southern Italy, describing the peculiarities of the South both with respect to Italy as a whole and with respect to the Northern, Eastern, and Central (NEC) regions taken together. The analysis is based for the most part on census data collected by the ISTAT and is concerned with the period 1971–81.
