ABSTRACT

The argument for the unreality of time, as it appears in Nature of Existence (NE) II, ends with a brief reference to the C series, the atemporal series that appears to us an A and a B series. The constituents of the C series are mental states, which are related to each other on the basis of their conceptual content in terms of being included in and inclusive of. The nature of the C series is strictly speaking beyond the scope of this chapter, because the C series doesn't constitute either a premise or an argument in the reasoning that leads to the conclusion that time is unreal. It serves only to save McTaggart from the embarrassment of not being able to explain how the indubitable experience of a Temporal Reality can exist in an Absolute and Timeless Reality. McTaggart thinks that, in addition to perceiving ourselves and our mental states, perceive other minds without mediation of sensa.
