ABSTRACT

The simulation exercise is two key differences: all and not only most world trade organization (WTO) members participate in multilateral negotiations, and multilateral negotiations usually cover more issues, not only in number but also in complexity, than plurilateral negotiations. Thus, this role-playing exercise is designed to reproduce as close as possible the realities of what happens behind the scenes and during negotiations of a multilateral trade agreement at the WTO. The aim is to provide students with a practical experience through which they can learn and appreciate the often-unknown dynamics of different trade negotiations and observe the differences between multilateral negotiations and other kinds of trade deals. Unlike plurilaterals, multilateral agreements are usually negotiations among countries with different views and stances about International Trade. In order to make the simulation more challenging and realistic, the countries must be chosen having in mind their diversity of purposes.
