ABSTRACT

Mother Earth or Bhoomi is our origin and the end. Tellus-Ma motifs throw light on the ecological concerns related to land and soil. Tellus-Ma motifs represent the sacredness of land, soil and the terrain in folktales from around the world. The materialistic society has rung the death knell to numerous species of flora and fauna because of their insensitive behaviour towards the land. The land provides sustenance and space to life on this planet. Earthworms create tunnels by burrowing into the soil, which aerates the soil to allow air, water and nutrients to reach deep down into the soil. Aqua-Stree narratives hint at woman's relationship with water. They provide references for both realistic and romantic connections between woman and water. The water bodies in a pristine natural environment are symbolic representations of earth's dynamism and energy that nourish the trees, plants, animals, human beings and grass without partiality.
