ABSTRACT

In order to analyse folktales from India, an ecofeminist-linguistic framework is evolved for the understanding of woman nature language relationships. The purpose of ecofeminist-linguistic framework is to revisit folktales and oral tales and reconstruct new meanings in women nature culture that communicate alternative worldviews for the sustainability of Mother Earth. Ecofeminist belief in the sacredness of life, guiding human beings to respect the inherent worth of all creation, is reinforced by woman nature motifs in folktales from India. An ecofeminist interpretation of folktales from different parts of the world would definitely provide an insight into the motifs, relationships, concerns, worldviews and consciousness of indigenous people and they can be studied either in the native language or in translation. The folktales from India try to capture women's imagination and thought processes in a much more authentic fashion than literary works.
