ABSTRACT

Museums are social institutions that serve society. Many codes of ethics have been initiated or revised in recent years because of this social commitment. Although phrased in different terms, codes often include statements relating to “beliefs that place a priority on human dignity.” 1 Ethics are more than rules of conduct, although founded on practices and guided by activities motivated by respect. Acting in accordance with the spirit of a code of ethics is more than following abstract rules. Conforming to a code without genuine care and concern for the inherent professional responsibility is disrespectful of the profession and the people it serves.
