ABSTRACT
Webster’s Third New International Dictionary defines a profession as a “calling requiring specialized knowledge and instruction in skills and methods as well as in scientific, historical, or scholarly principles underlying such skill and methods, maintaining by force of organizational or concerted opinion high standards of achievement and conduct. . . .” 1 The definition also identifies public service as the primary purpose of a profession. The service motive is an important characteristic of the museum profession.
