emphatic,itisatleastonewayofcorrectingtheveryuncritical

acceptanceofDickensianworldsthathasbecomesofashionable

amongrecentstudiesofthenovels.Ofcourse,NicholasNickleby isDickens'sfirstfull-scalenovelandwecanseethatinitheis

servinghisapprenticeship;butalthoughthismaybesomeexcuse,

itdoesnotalterthefactthatmuchoftheplotandnarrativeare mismanaged,thatthepresentationofsomeofthecharactersis grievouslyinconsistent,thattherearetoomanyconflicting tones,andthattheproliferatinginterestsstrainsohardagainst

eachotherthattheythreatentoblowthenovelapartatits seams.Andyetitisalsotruethatthenovel'sfaultsarewhatmake

itinteresting,sinceNicholasNicklebyisclearlyaworkwhichbetraysitsauthor'sobsessionwithcertainthemeswhichmoreor lesseruptintothenovel,inspiteofwhathetriesconsciouslyto

achieve.Suchthemesbecomedominantandcreativelyexplored inthegreatnovels,andIshallhavesomethingmoretosayabout
