ABSTRACT

Balanced assessment is an integral part of successful math workstations. Pre-assessments help to guide where students will go and what they will work on. The ongoing assessments help to guide the instruction throughout the unit of study. Anecdotals and checklists are important guideposts for where students are as well. The final assessments give information about what should be done next. This chapter discusses balanced assessment as it relates to math workstations. Teachers should also spend time watching students work in workstations and taking anecdotal notes of what they are doing. Checklists are an efficient way of recording what is happening in the workstations. A portfolio is an intentional, thoughtful, representative collection of student work. Students should be encouraged in every unit of study to select a few pieces of work that demonstrate understanding and include it in a portfolio of that unit.
