ABSTRACT
The goal of fluency workstations is that students can practice the different operations in their zone of proximal development. Students should practice their facts with a variety of games and activities that foster confidence, competence, and success. Throughout the workstations there should be anchor charts that help students to use different strategies and models. Fluency is really important and students need a great deal of opportunities to practice it throughout the year. There should be activities ranging from single digit to multi-digit operations. Students should be able to work with concrete materials as well as draw out/sketch math models. Students have to be able to look at the structure of numbers in a variety of ways and think about efficient ways to operate on those numbers accordingly. The fluency station stays up all year long and students work in their zone of proximal development, always working toward grade level goals.
