ABSTRACT

The goal of the fraction workstation is for students to work with and get on friendly terms with fractions. The fraction workstation activities should require a great deal of work with concrete manipulatives as well as many pictorial activities. The chapter provides the general structures for the activities and games that should take place across fraction topics in the workstation. Fractions should be modeled with the area model, the set model, and the linear model. Fraction squares, circles, and pattern blocks are other great tools. Too often students are rushed to order and compare fractions as an abstract activity. There should be plenty of opportunities for students to use Play-Doh, paper cutting, and drawing to make and compare fractions. Students should work with fractions every week of the school year, through energizers and routines so that when they get to their actual unit of study, they are ready.
