ABSTRACT

The international recognition of Indonesia’s emerging power status reflects a less contested process of status attribution and underscores both the country’s material and ideational prowess. As Indonesia continues to rise, Indonesians are becoming more aware of their status inconsistency, beginning to challenge the elements of inhibitive worldview and projecting their country as a Negara Besar. The Twenty-First century has seen increasing regional recognition of Indonesia’s rise as a pivotal player in the regional geopolitics. The idea of a broader geopolitical entitlement returns to redefine Jakarta’s regional geopolitics. The first decade of the Twenty-First century saw Indonesia identifying broader regional categories of East Asia and Asia-Pacific as preferred geopolitical contexts of the country’s regional diplomacy. National power in Indonesia has been understood as a holistic concept incorporating both material and non-material capabilities. It has been traditionally defined in terms of ‘national resilience’.
