My dear friend, I would be glad to take up the discussion of hate from the point where I left it

off in my last letter. You say that you agree with my idea that the opposite of love is not hate, but rather madness. But you have trouble understanding the way I see hate as an agent facilitating the work of separation from the beloved. As you so aptly observe, since this work tends to depend on coupling with aggression, which is now unbound from desire for love, hate becomes secondary.
