ABSTRACT

The relationship between age and mental health is becoming increasingly important because of the growth of the aged population. The worldwide trend in aging is toward larger and larger numbers of older people. In the United States, for example, some 14.5 percent of all Americans were aged sixty-five and over in 2014. Extremely rapid growth in the aged population in the early twenty-first century is expected to push the percentage of Americans aged sixty-five and over to 19.7 percent in 2030, and to 25 percent or one-fifth of the entire population by 2060. This is a significant trend because increased numbers of older people signal increased demand for mental health services by the aged in the future.
