ABSTRACT

In some ways, it is only a short step from risk management and the risk society to transition management. To give a specific example, carbon reduction is long-term risk management, based on the knowledge that carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gas emissions will promote climate change and eventually cause very serious disruption and threats to life and property. The role of human action in climate change is admittedly still disputed by some, but the possible long-term consequences are too serious to ignore. Transition is more than risk management, however. It involves a shift towards more sustainable systems of production and consumption. Moreover climate change, though crucially important, is not the only environmental consideration.
