ABSTRACT

The federal government, states and institutions have made decisions about preparation, admissions, and finance within this neoliberal arc, which seems likely to continue in the near future. As an epilogue, the chapter reviews evidence related to changes in federal policies funding affecting access and college success, and examines evidence related to these outcomes. It encourages readers to think about how to keep track of policy changes—and proposed policy and funding changes—that could influence access and success of prospective, current, and future college students. The chapter examines certain trends on preparation and access and on college success, along with related outcome, and briefly discusses the trajectory of federal policy in the global period. College Tuition: Access is influenced by both affordability and academic preparation. The trajectory toward inequality continues as the nation follows that pathway toward improved college preparation and increased emphasis on higher net prices for low-income students.
