ABSTRACT

Traditionally, music education has concerned itself overwhelmingly with 'classical’ music. Yet a large part of the culture of young people revolves around different types of ’pop’ music. In an age which is concerned to make education relevant to the needs and in terests of young people, it seems very strange that the curriculum ignores almost totally the h istory and development of popular music. This series of books serves to fill that gap and to provide young people with an initial understanding of the major influences on the music of their own cu ltu re .
