ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy as an overlooked but important component of care for bereaved parents, both at the time of loss and during the pregnancy that follows. CAM may therefore be used to alleviate stress levels and provide health benefits for both parents and the unborn baby. Physical activity may be an opportune means of alleviating stress in a pregnancy after loss but health care providers rarely suggest it. Aromatherapy is a CAM resource that can be used to help reduce stress during pregnancy. Yoga has been found to be of benefit during pregnancy as well as improving depressive symptoms and quality of life. A spiritual foundation in one's life can play an important role in ability to cope with fears and anxieties during a high-risk pregnancy. Many hospitals and clinics have integrated touch and massage into their practices.
