ABSTRACT

The handbook is intended to provide focused information that will help a designer make rational decisions regarding the use of green building strategies during the schematic design phase of a project. Case studies of exemplary projects that illustrate a range of green building types and contexts are included to encourage the use of such strategies and to highlight some of the exceptional green design work being done throughout the world. During the schematic design phase, an understanding of system potentials is critical to adoption of appropriate strategies. Likewise, a sense of system sizing requirements is vital to the architectural implementation of many strategies. Design strategies are connective—they may support each other or they may clash. Some may be counterproductive in one context and be exceptionally beneficial in another context. The strategies are tools that must be manipulated by a skillful designer.
