ABSTRACT
It has always been the alchemist’s desire to turn base metals, such as lead, into gold and silver. The legendary tool supposedly capable of achieving this was the philosopher’s stone. Although the alchemists never succeeded, their work led to the development of what we now call chemistry. This chapter looks at how substances can be chemically combined to form new materials and uses the particle model to explain the nature of the changes involved.
