ABSTRACT

This chapter reveals a success story, whereby an athlete was able to achieve his potential at a major games tournament, and exceed staff expectations. It focuses on area of multiculturalism and culturally inclusive applied practice, presents the athlete case study examines the acculturation of an immigrant high-performance combative sport athlete, whose evolving performance experiences are situated as part of the acculturation experience. The current case study is situated within the broader context, where athletes were developed within a team context with high levels of performance anxiety, low levels of financial support from the federal government, and a disconnect between personal effort and the like lihood of international success. When monitoring athlete engagement, as the case study in the chapter shows, the consultant must also be mindful of who the athlete is in terms of her/his various cultural identities, and how these identities intersect within the training and competition contexts to foster and sometimes impede development and performance.
