ABSTRACT

The benefits of viewing literacy instruction through the STEM lens result from the ability of students to generalize literacy strategies to other nonfiction text. The practice of reading is genuine and provides an interdisciplinary approach to solving authentic, real-world problems. STEM literacy encompasses some instructional practices that are interwoven:

◆ Close reading skills for non-fiction complex text ◆ Vocabulary development of STEM and non-STEM words ◆ Communicating using the authentic forms of scientists and engineers ◆ Argumentation and discourse from a STEM perspective ◆ Writing in many formats for different audiences ◆ Producing and evaluating resources for authenticity and accuracy.
