ABSTRACT

This chapter provides profiles of the 16 active UN peacekeeping missions. The United Nations (UN) has been deploying peacekeeping missions since 1948, soon after its founding in the wake of World War II. The first UN mission, the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), was established in order to observe a ceasefire between Israel and the Arab States. The first armed mission, the UN Emergency Force (UNEF I), was deployed in 1956 to address the Suez Crisis. Observer Group Lebanon (OGL) supports the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in Southern Lebanon. The United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) replaced the UNCIP in 1951 and continued to observe the ceasefire and investigate reports of violations. In addition to patrolling the area, United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) has also supported mine clearance activities and assisted the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the passage of mail, goods, and persons through the area of separation.
