ABSTRACT
To the historical and physical contexts of Tang Luoyang we now add a human dimension. In this chapter, following a demographic study and a brief, generic account of ordinary residents, we examine the lives of a select number of illustrious Luoyang inhabitants – royals, officials, scholars and artists, eminent monks, and foreigners – who, in varying degrees, helped shape the life and culture of the city.
