ABSTRACT

An important aspect of democracy and its processes and outcomes has already become apparent. At the heart of democracy is the relationship between the individual and society, as demonstrated both as the voter registering her/ his choice and the individual candidate representing a political party. Dewey recognised this symbiotic relationship. For Dewey, belief in democracy involves free and critical thinking, expression and debate in the:

. . . formation of public opinion, which in the long run is self-corrective, except faith in the capacity of the intelligence of the common man to respond with commonsense to the free play of facts and ideas which are secured by effective guarantees of free inquiry, free assembly and free communication?
