ABSTRACT

A contemporary of Irving Howe, Robie Macauley was acquainted with many members of the New York intellectuals. He was a contributor to The New Republic and Partisan Review, as well as to the magazines of the Congress for Cultural Freedom. He was also a representative of the U.S. Department of State to Australia on a cultural tour in 1962 and active in the International Association of Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists, and Novelists (PEN), serving as the American representative at several international PEN congresses.
