ABSTRACT
Although a great deal has been written about “the power elite,” much of it has been speculative, impressionistic, and polemical. Serious difficulties confront the social scientist who wishes to move away from anecdote and ideology to serious scientific research on national elites—research that “names names,” attempts operational definitions, develops testable hypotheses, and produces some reliable information about national leadership.
