ABSTRACT

For most people, the term “feature film” conjures up images of “real actors” and stage sets. Certainly, most of the films under discussion in this part fit this bill, but the next two films are animated. Persepolis deals with women's rights, a subject that is explored in several other feature films and documentaries. One of the major human rights treaties is the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). As the Preamble to the Convention points out, notwithstanding previous international efforts to improve the situation of women, “extensive discrimination” continues to exist—thereby violating international human rights standards.
