ABSTRACT

Rape has always been a part of war, which, in part, helps explain the longstanding cavalier attitude towards the practice and those who have carried it out. However, more recently there has been a growing recognition of the heinousness of the act and the manner in which wartime rape is simply not a private offense but the result of deliberate state policy—and a crime against humanity. One of the things that helped bring this issue to the fore was the practice of forced impregnation that was used by Serbian and Bosnian Serbian soldiers on Bosnian Muslim women. However, the following film depicts these horrors in an earlier time and a different setting.
