ABSTRACT

South Africa is widely hailed for its political and social transformation. In the space of less than two decades, South Africa has gone from being a pariah nation that was ruled under the banner of apartheid to a society founded on the principle of equality and justice. The vehicle for achieving this was the country's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which operated under the principle that the best way of moving the society forward was to first establish the truth about the horrors that had taken place under apartheid rule. In that way, the TRC was set up so that amnesty would be granted to those who had committed a political crime and were willing to come forward and tell the truth about this.
