ABSTRACT

When I heard the great news that my autobiography Vibrations was to be reissued in paperback by Thunder’s Mouth Press, thirty-two years after its initial publication in 1968,1 didn’t have time to celebrate. I had to finish re-orchestrating my score for The Manchurian Candidate, written in 1962, for a first concert performance. I also had to finish liner notes for a reissue of my Triple Concerto for Woodwinds, Brass, Jazz Quintet and Orchestra. I was also completing Starry Night for Clarinet and Strings and the last movement of a flute concerto, Giants of the Night, for James Galway. I stayed up until 3:30 a.m. and finally crashed out. At 5:30 a.m. I got up, took a shower, fed the animals on our farm, got the kids off to school, and drove to Stewart Newburgh Airport to catch a 9 a.m. flight.
