ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on classroom instruction. It begins with a bit of history of how teaching has changed-and how it hasn’t changed-over the past two hundred years. It then discusses theories of children’s learning, introduces key principles of “authentic” instruction, and reviews some related instructional approaches. Together, these theories, principles, and approaches-coupled with deep, worthwhile content, as described in Chapter 5-encourage effort and persistence, promote intellectual rigor and democratic dispositions, and help students see themselves as competent learners.
