ABSTRACT

You must do the thing you think you can not do.

These words of the former president of the Czech Republic and playwright Vaclav Havel, and those of former American First Lady and ambassador to the United Nations Eleanor Roosevelt, capture the spirit of many teachers as they begin their careers. Teachers face daunting challenges that schools, alone, can’t overcome, and teachers reach for ambitious goals that they, alone, can’t attain. Yet they are determined to use their knowledge and skills to struggle for social justice.
