ABSTRACT

In the introduction we examined the events that led to the emergence of the new economy and how the lack of social infrastructure embedded in the workplace (such as health insurance and pensions) make the U.S. workforce more vulnerable and less certain now than during the boom of the industrial era. In spite of the new economy celebration of individual initiative, this sense of uncertainty only grows stronger. The promise of the new economy has not clearly been kept for many of those who are working under changing conditions, facing greater risks, and shouldering more responsibility for their own security.
