ABSTRACT

Throughout this book, negotiation is used as a trifocal lens to explore a range of international problems and theories of human behavior. One application of this trifocal lens is to examine broad historical patterns of cooperation and conflict. Specific issues and problems in contemporary international relations also were discussed. Certainly, the principles of negotiation are central to the international system, in terms of both its broad operation and the way decisions get made. The practice of negotiations, however, is not limited to international politics. The skills that make one effective in international negotiations (strong communication skills, assertiveness, empathy for one’s adversary, creativity, flexibility, and cultural sensitivity) are valuable career and life skills. Indeed, negotiation is practiced regularly in many professions in many sectors of the economy. This final chapter focuses on the professional application of negotiation and how to develop further negotiating skills.
