ABSTRACT

In the 1960s the United States was embroiled in a bitter war in Vietnam. A lottery-style draft forced men to serve in the military, with exclusions provided for college students (e.g., the 2-S student deferment). Men who were between eighteen and twenty-fi ve years of age during the Vietnam era could postpone or avoid military service by going to college. Thus, those who could afford college could avoid the war, while those who could not were drafted.
