ABSTRACT

Knowing how to cultivate community is an essential ability for educators desiring to effectively engage their students. It is particularly vital for teachers who will help reduce the growing incidence of HIV and AIDS. This chapter asserts that an educator who can harness the humanizing power inherent in community can interact with students as a transformational agent, one who conveys academic and life lessons, including HIV/AIDS prevention. These lessons, including but not limited to academic information, afford students greater access to knowledge, skills, and life opportunities. Such a transformational agent is grounded in a culture and practice of community that guides and inspires classroom instruction.
