ABSTRACT

In the preceding chapters we have provided an overview of the sources of demographic data, methods of analyses, and principles for using and communicating the results of demographic analyses. In this chapter, we provide examples of the use of demographic data for different areas of analysis and reporting. Examples are provided from the media, business, and government. For each example, we describe the context in which the particular example occurred, how data were located, presented, and used, and the results of the analysis, and we provide some lessons from the examples that demonstrate the utility of the principles noted in Chapters 6 and 7. Since we provide examples of both inappropriate and appropriate uses of demographic data, we do not always provide the actual names of the companies, governments, media outlets, or individuals involved. The examples are of real uses by real users, however, and hopefully help demonstrate how to appropriately and effectively use, and how not to use, demographic data for analyses of events and conditions of importance to the media and the private and public sectors.
