ABSTRACT
The fulcrum that does the heavy lifting for us all semester long is Frederick Douglass’s Narrative, which shows us a man raised in captivity like a beast of burden, beaten and driven, who somehow summons the strength to break his bonds, escape to freedom, and become a leader of his people—author of one of America’s great books and inspiration for later generations, including our own.
