ABSTRACT

On the face of it, any identification of Bob Geldof with diplomacy seems far-fetched, even ridiculous. Although it is hardly a stretch to consider Bono statesman-like, few would give Geldof that compliment. He communicates at, not in conjunction with, other actors. He arouses but does not mediate. Geldof ’s contribution, though, matters enormously to the expression of celebrity diplomacy. Yet he remains a misfit in terms of the modalities of its application. With all these characteristics in mind, therefore, Geldof is more appropriately labeled an antidiplomat.
