ABSTRACT

A strategy of political contention related to revolution, and often intertwined with it, is terrorism. This is a phenomenon that has been of great interest to both scholars and laypersons alike over the past three decades, for reasons that are fairly obvious. In this chapter, I discuss the nature of terrorism and terrorist movements and show how they are both similar to and different from revolutions and revolutionary movements. A key goal of the chapter is to explain why certain types of terrorism and terrorist movements occur and why they have become increasingly common in the modern world.
