ABSTRACT
Historiography was conceived of as epistheme, that is true knowledge, by Herodotus, in contrast with mere opinion (doxa). In a similar (even if not identical) way, philosophers of several epochs contrasted true knowledge, represented by philosophy, with the doxa of everyday thinking.
