ABSTRACT

This last equation looks like a matching equation (cf. Equation 1.1). It states that the rate of responses emitted on one key, relative to the rate of all responses emitted, equals the rate of reinforcers obtained for pecking one key, relative to the rate of all reinforcers obtained. Hermstein’s equation for response rates in single schedules is thus a strict matching equation with the added assumption that the total rate of output is constant.
