ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to consider the benefi t and possible approaches of a strategic formulation and implementation of “the Nexus approach” in SIDS.

In 2011 the Federal Government of Germany, joined by the European Union and a number of nongovernmental stakeholders including the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), initiated the fi rst global conference on what was being called the Nexus of water, energy and climate. The Nexus approach emphasizes the interconnections between water, energy and climate, and more recently food. It also promotes more integrated and holistic approaches in policy and programming and a shift toward “sustainable consumption and production.” At the heart of the 2011 Bonn Conference was the idea that “a nexus perspective helps to bring economic benefi ts through more effi cient utilization of resources, productivity gains and reduced waste.”
