ABSTRACT

May 1, 2011: In a late-night address to the nation, Barack Obama told America and the world that the U.S. military and CIA operatives had finally hunted down Osama bin Laden in his hideout in Pakistan and that the Al Qaeda leader was dead. The news touched off an extraordinary outpouring of emotion as crowds gathered outside the White House, in Times Square, at the Ground Zero site, and elsewhere throughout the country. People were waving American flags and chanting “U.S.A., U.S.A.!” In New York City, people sang “The Star-Spangled Banner;” in Washington, DC, drivers honked horns deep into the night.
