ABSTRACT

Applied history is history used for some purpose other than knowing history or responding historically; its forms may range from the ridiculous (in supplying questions for quiz games), to the sublime (providing plots for Shake speare’s plays). As we have noticed, there is no necessary dichotomy between it and pure history; in many areas the two approaches overlap. But in this chapter I shall try to isolate some of history’s applications. In the context of the school, I shall identify three general themes: integration, socialization and personal development.
