ABSTRACT

Contemporary society is marked by the pervasiveness and ubiquity of digital technologies of communication and, consequently, by a deluge of digital data that has saturated our everyday lives. The extent of this deluge is effectively captured by an infographic that circulated virally on the Internet a few years ago, disseminated by the social media company Domo (2014) and entitled “Data Never Sleeps: How Much Data is Generated Every Minute?” This infographic is a pictorial representation of what happens on the Internet every minute of each day. For instance, we learn that Google receives more than 2 million search queries, 571 new websites are created, Wordpress users publish 347 new blog posts, YouTube users upload 48 hours of new videos, Instagram users share 3,600 new photos, brands and organisations on Facebook receive 34,722 likes, over 100,000 tweets are sent, and so on.
