G eorge Bruce Thom pson, the author o f this and other songs, was a native o f the Aberdeenshire parish o f New Deer and a friend o f the collector, Gavin Greig, who wrote in 19 10 in the Buchan Observer:
Although never hitherto printed, these songs have got about and abroad until I begin to get records o f them from singers at a distance. It is well that the versions o f them should be correct and I am glad to be able, through the courtesy o f the author, to print ‘Sheelicks’ from his own mansucript.
